Master student project proposals
at the CERN ATLAS and FASER experiments

The group of Prof. Anna Sfyrla of the DPNC offers projects for Master students. Interested Bachelor students are also eligible. The projects below are a non-exhaustive list; other projects in line with the research of the group can be proposed and discussed.

Interested students should get in touch with anna.sfyrla_at_unige.ch.

Search for New Physics with two Higgs bosons and missing transverse momentum at the ATLAS experiment

Supervisor: Dr. Chiara Rizzi, Univ. of Geneva

The Higgs boson, discovered in 2012, completes the Standard Model of Particle Physics but also provides an excellent opportunity to search for new phenomena. In some New Physics models, a pair of Higgs bosons can be produced in association with dark matter particles, which interact only weakly and therefore escape undetected, giving rise to an energy imbalance in the event (missing transverse momentum). We will search for these events focusing on the cases where each Higgs boson decays to a pair of b-quarks.
Depending on the interests of the student, the project can focus on different areas of the analysis, ranging from background estimate techniques to the design of machine learning methods to reconstruct the particles in the events and discriminate between New Physics and Standard Model events.
